Thank God for Music

Last week during the meet-and-greet time of our church service, a song played that brought on a feeling I have had many times. A joyful ache, a sense of hope and promise, which happens even in a sad time. I don’t remember the song; I don’t even know if I knew it.

Often, I’ll get this swell inside when I hear a song, a certain sound. I may have no idea of the words—I might not even like the words if I remembered them—but I know that joy. The day opens up, and I feel lifted. I smile; sometimes I cry.

God gave this to us in waterfalls, in the drumming of rain, from birds and wild animals, the clomp of horses’ hooves, wind brushing through leaves, a baby’s laugh, the whispers from someone we love.

I get a sense of such healing possibility. Lord God, just another gift to thank you for.

“I Got a Name” by Jim Croce; “El Shaddai,” Amy Grant; “It’s a Big Old Goofy World,” John Prine; “What a Wonderful World,” Louis Armstrong.

  2. First, Happy Birthday, and many, many more! Sorry I forgot it yesterday, but it was a strange day.

I love "It's a Wonderful Word" by Louis Armstrong. In fact, I like most of his songs. "El Shaddai" by Amy Grant is also one of my favorites. We used to live in an old farmhouse that had a tin roof. When we moved, we had a regular house with a regular roof. We all loved the sound of the rain on the tin roof. Our son asked if we could put a tin roof over his room. He loved the relaxing sound. It lulled him to sleep. Rain and the ocean are my favorite.
    Have a bless day, Kathy.

Rain on a tin roof, waterfalls, creeks that run & ripple. So many songs touch my heart, but I can’t think of the name of any of them.
Your writing always blesses me; your words brighten & bless my heart.

  5. Sharon K Connell here. Happy birthday, Kathy. I'm retired from the 9 to 5 scene, but I still work full-time on writing, so I'm not sure what to call myself. LOL

My favorite hymn is "Be Thou My Vision."

I love any songs by John Denver. "Morning Has Broken" by Cat Stevens and "It is Well With My Soul" (can't think of the author's name right now) always make me smile.

    Make it a great weekend!

  7. Hi Kathy. Happy belated birthday! Hope you had a great day.You are way younger than I! I love country music and one of my favorites since my husband passed is "You Were Always on My Mind" for the line that states: "Little things I should have said and done, I just never took the time" always tears at my heartstrings. Favorite worship music and hymns, oh my, I could name a dozen at least. Off the top of my head is Majesty, In the Garden, The Old Rugged Cross, I Surrender All, Here I am, Lord, others that I love but can't think of the names off hand.
